School Groups

Sheep and two lambsPlanning a field trip? Reservations are required for all school programs at Ash Lawn-Highland, which are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Reservations must be placed at least two weeks in advance and require a minimum of 10 students. Large group rates and longer programs will apply for groups with more than 60 participants. Student Programs

 
Guided House Tour & Grounds Only (All ages)

Time: 1-1.5 hours
Includes a tour of Monroe house geared toward students. Guided tour of the grounds includes outbuildings, dependency spaces, gardens, animals, and historic games.

Farm Tour (Pre-K through 2nd grade)

Time: 2 hours
Tour James Monroe’s farm with a guide. Activities include visiting with farm animals, gardens, historic games and interactive demonstrations. Tour does not go inside the Monroe house.

Colonel Monroe (3rd-6th grade)

Time: 2 hours
Did you know James Monroe fought and was wounded in the Revolutionary War? Students will role play James Monroe’s experience using objects and primary sources. Program includes a house tour, guided grounds visit and historic games.

Negotiations (4th-8th grade)

Time: 2 hours
Students will be guided through the treaty-making process from the perspective of both President James Monroe and the Chickasaw Indians. As they role-play the treaty-making process, students will learn and practice the art of negotiation. Program includes a house tour, guided grounds visit and historic games.

Archaeology at Highland (3rd grade-up)

Time: 2 hours
In this hands-on program, students learn about life at James Monroe’s Highland plantation, explore the pathways of archaeological research, and interpret real artifacts. Program includes a house tour, guided grounds visit and historic games.

Historic Crafts

 

Time: 30 minutes
Crafts can be requested separately for groups of 10 or more OR added to a school group visit itinerary:
