The dining room features a Hepplewhite dining table purchased shortly after the Monroes' marriage in 1786. The addition of semicircular banquet ends allows it to be expanded for guests. The Monroes used the imported French mirror, or looking glass, to expand the sense of space in a room and to reflect light from candles, still an important source of illumination in the 1800's. Part of a two-dozen set, the handcarved chairs (an American Federal interpretation of the French Empire style) were used by the Monroes in the White House.
